Sean Dyche has emerged as a surprise contender to take charge at Middlesbrough following the departure of Michael Carrick.
The former Burnley and Everton boss is reportedly open to a Championship return as Boro search for a new manager. Dyche doesn’t appear on the latest Middlesbrough manager betting odds, but he is apparently under consideration.
Dyche Considered as Boro Plot Promotion Push
Middlesbrough’s decision to part ways with Carrick has sparked an intense search for a manager capable of reigniting their Premier League ambitions. According to SportsBoom, 53-year-old Sean Dyche is a leading candidate under consideration.
Dyche has been out of work since his sacking by Everton in January, having recorded just three wins from his final 19 games in charge at Goodison Park. He was replaced by David Moyes, who returned for a second stint with the Merseyside club.
Despite his Premier League pedigree, Dyche is believed to be open to the idea of guiding a Championship club back to the top flight—something he achieved twice during his long and successful tenure at Burnley. Across 425 matches in charge of the Clarets, he recorded 149 wins and 118 draws, establishing himself as one of the most respected managers outside the Premier League’s traditional elite.
Although Dyche is also believed to be monitoring the situation at Leicester City, where Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future remains unresolved, the vacancy at Middlesbrough may offer the kind of challenge that appeals to him: a well-supported club with Premier League history and a squad built to compete.
Carrick’s tenure ended with disappointment, having failed to secure a top-six finish in either of the past two seasons. After reaching the play-offs in 2022–23, Boro regressed, prompting the board to act.

Writer’s View
Appointing Sean Dyche would represent a major coup for Middlesbrough. While the club has leaned towards younger, progressive coaches in recent years, Dyche’s proven Championship record—especially his double promotion with Burnley—could be exactly what’s needed to finally break back into the Premier League.
His style might not please every purist, but his track record of building resilient, effective sides speaks for itself. With Leicester reportedly on his radar, Boro may need to act fast if they want to land a manager who guarantees structure, discipline, and a genuine shot at promotion.
