Bolton Wanderers Face Stiff Competition In Defender Hunt

Bolton Wanderers face stiff competition in their pursuit of Hull City left-back Matty Jacob this summer.

The 24-year-old is attracting interest from several clubs as Hull prepare to offload him ahead of the 2025–26 campaign.

Jacob Draws EFL and Overseas Interest

The Trotters are not alone in their bid to sign Matty Jacob, with two other League One clubs and at least one overseas side also keen on landing the talented full-back. Hull City are searching for a new manager and have made Jacob available for transfer, seeking to free up wage space for their own incoming additions.

Despite having signed a new three-year deal with the Tigers as recently as March 2024, Jacob has struggled for game time. He made just eight starts last season and has reportedly been informed that he does not feature in the club’s long-term plans.

Wanderers boss Steven Schumacher is known to be targeting a specialist left-back to bolster his defensive options, and Jacob appears to be high on his list. Bolton are confident they can offer the regular Championship-level minutes the defender has been denied at the MKM Stadium.

Jacob, a graduate of Hull City’s academy system and the grandson of ex-Tigers defender Geoff Barker, has been steadily building his professional reputation. He made his senior debut in January 2024 and quickly made an impact—scoring in an FA Cup tie against Birmingham City and later notching a league goal in a win over Sheffield United. His form in early 2024 even saw him named Hull’s Player of the Month for January.

Though his time in the Hull first team has been limited, Jacob impressed during loan spells at Pickering Town and Gateshead, and his technical ability and attacking intent from left-back have made him a coveted asset.

Writer’s View

Matty Jacob’s availability presents an intriguing opportunity for several ambitious League One clubs, and Bolton Wanderers’ interest makes perfect sense. His limited minutes at Hull are misleading—he’s a modern full-back with potential, and Schumacher’s desire for a left-sided specialist aligns neatly with Jacob’s strengths.

Bolton must now act decisively to fend off competition, as the presence of rival suitors—particularly from abroad—will only drive up interest in a player still approaching his peak. With Hull keen to offload ahead of a new manager arriving, and Jacob eager for regular football, a summer move looks increasingly likely.
