Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry has claimed he isn’t sure what Kwame Poku is waiting for after receiving a lucrative offer from Birmingham City.
The 23-year-old is out of contract at the Weston Homes Stadium this summer and is already confirmed to be leaving the club. Regardless, Posh are set to receive a handsome fee due to the player’s age.
It has been well documented that the winger is wanted by a host of clubs having contributed 30 goals and 30 assists in 147 appearances since joining from Colchester United in 2021. Birmingham have been consistently rumoured to be the frontrunners, whilst Premier League new boys Sunderland have also been named as an interested party.
Fry Urges Poku To Join Birmingham…Again
Speaking last month, club legend Fry urged Poku to make the move to St Andrew’s, saying:
“Birmingham wanted Kwame last summer. Eight clubs wanted Kwame in January. They all wanted him instantly to help promotion pushes, but he was injured so that was a non-starter. I know of 12 clubs who now want him, but according to his agent there are 26 clubs at home and abroad after Kwame. Obviously if he moves abroad that’s not good news for us.
“In my opinion Birmingham will make him an offer others won’t be able to match, but his agent seems to think Birmingham won’t be challenging for promotion next season whereas I do. I’ve met the owner and he’s incredibly ambitious.”
With the attacker’s next destination still unknown, Fry has once again addressed the situation, joking that his agent is maybe waiting for an offer from Real Madrid:
“Birmingham made Kwame a life-changing financial offer so I don’t know what he’s waiting for. Maybe he thinks Real Madrid will come in for him!”
Writer’s View
Barry Fry is clearly desperate to draw a conclusion to this saga and it’s easy to see why. If Poku makes a move to another club in this country, they will receive a significant sum which will drastically alter the business they can do in the transfer market. However, if the winger opts for a club outside of England, that fee will be seriously reduced. From the player’s perspective, with so many offers on the table, he will be keen to make sure his next destination is the one that is best for his career. Birmingham will be an attractive prospect, but they will spend big elsewhere which could leave him fighting for his place in the starting lineup.
