Danny Rohl Addresses Sheffield Wednesday Future

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has admitted that he would like to make the move to the Bundesliga ‘as soon as possible’.

The 36-year-old joined took his first step into senior management with the Owls in October 2023 with the club seemingly destined for an instant return to League One. However, Rohl turned things around and eventually secured their safety on the final day of the campaign.

With the German starting to attract attention from elsewhere, Wednesday took the opportunity to tie him down to a new long-term deal last summer. This proved to be a masterstroke, with Rohl cementing their place in the Championship this past season with a 12th placed finish.

Despite that, the former Bayern Munich coach is expected to depart Hillsborough this summer. He has already been linked with a number of positions, including RB Leipzig, Southampton and Leicester City.

“We’ll See What Happens” – Rohl Coy Over Future

Wednesday are still a club in turmoil off the pitch. There are continuous protests over the ownership from supporters, whilst staff continue to have to contend with late payments.

These difficulties have led to a fractured relationship between Rohl and chairman Dejphon Chansiri. Therefore, it is no surprise that the manager has hinted that he could move on before the start of the next campaign.

Speaking to German media outlet BILDhe was asked when he would like to take on a position in the Bundesliga:

“If it were up to me, as soon as possible. The Bundesliga is obviously something special because I grew up with it. For me, it’s always about working at the highest level.

“I want to compete against the best teams, with the best coaches. I have the good feeling that I’ve been able to generate significant added value over the last 18, 19 months in a demanding league with very different playing styles.”

Continuing, Rohl addressed the constant links to other clubs:

“I see the interest from clubs as validation of my work. There were inquiries last year, too, even from Germany, from the Bundesliga .

“It feels good that my name is constantly being mentioned both here in England and in Germany. But I also know that football is fast-paced. The last 18 or 19 months are no reason to rest. I remain very, very ambitious. And I’m always ready to work hard. We’ll see what happens in the summer.”

Writer’s View

It’s inevitable that Danny Rohl won’t be at the dugout at Sheffield Wednesday next season. This is making it difficult to start planning for the next campaign and leaves supporters anxious over what the future holds. That’s not a dig at the manager. Those difficulties have been caused by those above him. The German deserves his shot at a higher level. The work he has done at Hillsborough has been nothing short of miraculous.
