Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie has backed Wrexham to beat Leeds United to the signing of former England international Aaron Cresswell.
The Red Dragons are gearing up for life in the Championship after securing three successive promotions. They are expected to bring in a host of new arrivals over the summer in order to build a squad capable of competing at the top end of the second tier.
A host of names have already been linked with a move to The STōK Cae Ras, including the likes of Jamie Vardy, Patrick Bamford, Ben Davies and Tom Lawrence. However, it is defender Cresswell who has emerged as a genuine contender in recent days.
Hendrie Urges Wrexham To Strike Cresswell Deal
The 35-year-old ended his 11 year stay at the Hammers following the climax of the 2024/25 season. Although he is in the twilight of his career, he is a player that has racked up over 300 Premier League appearances and is not yet ready to hang up his boots.
Recently promoted Leeds United are said to be amongst his admirers, but it has previously been claimed that the defender would be keen on a move to Wrexham for location reasons. It’s a deal which former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie believes the Welsh-based outfit need to strike. Speaking to Football League World, he said:
“Aaron Cresswell is 35 years of age, he comes with loads of experience.
“He was limited on what (game time) he had last season – I think it was something like 20 appearances in the Premier League. So he obviously couldn’t find his way back into the side and now he’s available on a free.
“For someone like Wrexham, coming into the Championship, I think it will work well because of his experience alone.
“He’d be a good addition, a good footballer, there’s no doubt about that, and I feel that he could drop into the Championship and be a very good player for them.
“On a free transfer, 35, experienced, why wouldn’t they take him on? I think it’d be a good signing for the Welsh side.”
Writer’s View
Wrexham are likely to be in the mix when it comes to Cresswell deciding his next club. He may well feel that the prospect of Premier League football with Leeds United is the more attractive offer, but there’s no doubt that Wrexham will be able to offer him more regular game time. The Red Dragons continue to be linked with a number of unattainable targets, but the former England international is a realistic option and one that would strengthen their Championship prospects next season.
