Cult Wrexham Figure To Stay And Fight For Championship Spot

Ollie Palmer has dismissed speculation over his Wrexham future and vowed to fight for his place ahead of the club’s return to the Championship.

The veteran striker has fallen down the pecking order since January but insists he has no intention of leaving the Racecourse Ground.

Palmer Committed to Wrexham Despite Reduced Role

The 33-year-old was once a central figure in Phil Parkinson’s side, but the arrivals of Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez in the January transfer window pushed him to the fringes. The new signings formed the preferred strike partnership during Wrexham’s successful League One promotion push, a campaign that ended with a second-place finish and a third consecutive promotion.

Palmer’s last league appearance came in January’s 3-2 home defeat to Stevenage, the game that ended Wrexham’s remarkable 22-match unbeaten home run. Despite the lack of minutes since, Palmer made it clear in an interview with CBS Sports Golazo that he remains committed to the project at Wrexham.

“There’s always those rumours but I’m going to come back. It’s obviously a hugely talented squad already, and the gaffer is going to build on that, but I’m going to come back, fight for my shirt, get fit, get ready and go again.”

Palmer joined Wrexham in January 2022 from AFC Wimbledon for what was then a club-record fee. A key part of their National League and League Two promotion-winning squads, the target man has three promotions on his CV with the club and is under contract until the summer of 2026.

He also addressed ongoing rumours about a potential departure, citing the challenges of commuting from London but reaffirming his desire to remain part of the squad.

“I’ve actually had that since I arrived. Every window I’ve been at the club people think that I’m going to leave. My family are down in London and I commute between the two… but I’m going to come back.”

Palmer’s loyalty and experience could yet prove invaluable as Wrexham prepare for life back in the second tier for the first time in over 20 years.

Writer’s View

Ollie Palmer’s attitude is exactly what Wrexham will need as they face a step up in quality next season. While he may no longer be first choice, nor stands a chance of being, his experience, professionalism, and physical presence could play a crucial role in the dressing room.

It’s easy to overlook figures like Palmer during a club’s rise, but his willingness to stay and compete reflects the culture Phil Parkinson has instilled and the lure of a big wage packet. Whether he’s starting games or supporting from the bench, Palmer looks set to remain a valuable part of Wrexham’s Championship journey.
