Sheffield Wednesday Boss Hints at Exit Amid Bundesliga Link

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl has given his clearest indication yet that his future may lie away from South Yorkshire, amid growing speculation linking him with RB Leipzig.

The 35-year-old German, who completed his first full season in management at Hillsborough this month, gave a candid interview to Leipzig-based outlet RBLive in which he expressed his ambition to coach at the top level.

Under Contract

Röhl, who remains under contract with Wednesday until 2027, spoke openly about his desire to work in the Bundesliga or Premier League. Leipzig, a club where he previously served as assistant manager, is currently searching for a new boss and Röhl is believed to be on their radar.

“I always want to work with the best players and compete with the best coaches. The Bundesliga is, of course, a top choice. After all, I grew up with the Bundesliga. But the Premier League is also a dream. I’m currently very excited to see what happens this summer.”

His comments come as RB Leipzig, currently sixth in the Bundesliga, look to appoint a permanent replacement for Marco Rose. The club is being led by interim boss Zsolt Löw – a close friend of Röhl’s – until a long-term decision is made.

Röhl joined Wednesday in October 2023 during a turbulent period and played a key role in keeping the club in the Championship. However, behind-the-scenes tensions have been evident. He previously clashed with the board over infrastructure issues and was denied a mid-season move to Southampton, sparking reports of discontent.

“I’m very grateful to Sheffield for the opportunity I’ve been given there,” Röhl told RBLive. “But to develop a club, you have to weigh up how far that’s still possible or whether the maximum has already been reached under the current conditions.”

Despite only being a head coach for two years, Röhl boasts an impressive CV including spells as assistant at Bayern Munich, Southampton and with the German national team. He insists he is prepared to step up to a Champions League-level club, should the opportunity arise.

Writer’s View

Danny Röhl’s openness in this interview suggests his time at Sheffield Wednesday could be nearing its conclusion. His ambition to return to the Bundesliga or break into the Premier League is clear, and Leipzig – with their Champions League ambitions and personal ties – appears a natural fit.

While Wednesday fans will be disappointed, Röhl’s tenure has brought credibility and energy to the club. If he departs, it will be with his reputation significantly enhanced – and with the Owls needing to find a manager ready to build on his foundations.
