The Blades produced a clinical display to brush aside 10-man Bristol City in the Championship play-off semi-final first leg.
Brooks and O’Hare Fire Blades to Big First-Leg Advantage
Sheffield United all but booked their place at Wembley with a convincing 3-0 win over Bristol City at Ashton Gate in the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final.
Chris Wilder’s side seized control just before half-time when Rob Dickie was sent off for dragging down Kieffer Moore, allowing Harrison Burrows to fire the visitors ahead from the penalty spot. Second-half goals from substitutes Andre Brooks and Callum O’Hare sealed a result that leaves City needing a miracle in the return leg at Bramall Lane.
The hosts had gone into the match hoping to capitalise on one of the league’s best home records, but their night unravelled after Dickie’s dismissal – his second red card of the season against United. Before that, Joe Williams had rattled the crossbar with a thunderous 25-yard strike in what proved to be their only real chance.
Earlier, Tyrese Campbell thought he’d put the visitors ahead when he nodded in after a long throw, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. The Blades kept pressing, with Moore and Campbell both denied by Max O’Leary before the crucial breakthrough.

Turning Point
The game’s turning point came in first-half stoppage time. A long ball over the top found Moore, and Dickie’s desperate lunge left referee Keith Stroud with little choice but to show red. Burrows stepped up and calmly sent O’Leary the wrong way to hand United the lead.
Already hampered by the earlier injury to Williams, City manager Liam Manning was forced into major changes at the break. But United’s control only grew, and Wilder’s triple substitution proved inspired.
Within minutes, Burrows fired a low ball across goal, O’Hare’s clever dummy foxed the defence, and Brooks arrived at the back post to double the lead. Just six minutes later, Gustavo Hamer’s corner was nodded on for O’Hare to slot home from close range, sending the away end into raptures with chants of “We’re going to Wembley.”
Writer’s View
Sheffield United were ruthless when it mattered. This was a performance full of discipline, quality and smart game management. With three away goals, Chris Wilder’s men have one foot firmly in the play-off final. Callum O’Hare and Andre Brooks made telling contributions off the bench, while Harrison Burrows looks like one of the smartest January signings in recent memory.
For Bristol City, the wait for play-off success looks set to continue. Unless they produce something extraordinary at Bramall Lane, United will be heading back to Wembley – and few would argue they don’t deserve it.
