Former Barnsley and Mansfield Town Man Released By Relegated Club

Cambridge United have confirmed that Paul Digby is among 11 players leaving the club this summer, as part of a major post-relegation reshuffle under manager Neil Harris.

The 29-year-old, who began his career with Barnsley before spells at Ipswich Town, Mansfield Town and Forest Green Rovers, signed for Cambridge in July 2020. His impact was immediate, playing a central role in the side that clinched promotion from League Two during the 2020/21 campaign.

Digby went on to make 229 appearances in total for the U’s, often captaining the side and becoming one of the club’s most influential figures during their four-year stint in League One. His leadership and consistency earned him cult status among fans, with many considering him one of the standout performers of the modern era.

The former England U19 international was also a starter in one of Cambridge’s most memorable recent victories – the stunning 1–0 FA Cup win over Premier League side Newcastle United at St James’ Park in January 2022.

Bonner Pays Tribute

Director of Football Mark Bonner paid tribute to Digby in the club’s retained list announcement, acknowledging his contributions both on and off the pitch.

“We say goodbye to some excellent professionals; individuals who have given their all to the Club. In particular, I want to thank Paul Digby for his exceptional commitment and leadership over several seasons. He’s been a true servant to Cambridge United.”

Another long-serving player, defender Jubril Okedina, also departs after making 138 appearances. Like Digby, Okedina was part of the ‘Lockdown Legends’ team and played in the FA Cup win at Newcastle.

11 Players Depart

In total, 11 players will leave Cambridge this summer following the expiry of their contracts. The list includes Jack Stevens, Louis Chadwick, Danny Andrew, George Thomas, Jordan Cousins, Ben Stevenson, Dan Barton, Brandon Njoku and Amaru Kaunda. Gary Gardner exits by mutual consent, while loanees such as Nathan Bishop and Taylor Richards have returned to their parent clubs.

Cambridge retain 11 players under contract, including Elias Kachunga, Korey Smith and Shayne Lavery, with new deals being discussed for Liam Bennett, Michael Morrison and Sullay Kaikai.

Writer’s View

Paul Digby’s release is a significant moment for Cambridge United. A reliable figure through both promotion and survival battles, his departure underscores the scale of change taking place at the Abbey Stadium. Digby will leave with his head held high – a leader on the pitch and a role model off it. With League Two clubs sure to take interest in his experience and composure, a swift return to the EFL may well be on the cards for the former Barnsley man. For Cambridge, the rebuild begins in earnest.
