Northampton Town manager Kevin Nolan is preparing for a critical week as he finalises the club’s retained list, with several players set to leave Sixfields following end-of-season reviews.
Nolan, who took charge in December, has overseen 25 matches during his first campaign at the helm and admits that making decisions over who stays and who goes will involve “difficult conversations” with members of his squad.
Nolan leaning on experience before key squad call
While the ultimate decision rests with the manager, Nolan confirmed he will consult with assistant coaches Ian Sampson and Marc Richards, both of whom worked under previous boss Jon Brady. Their insight into the squad’s behaviour and performances prior to Nolan’s arrival could prove pivotal.
“You can never take it off one game or two games,” Nolan said. “It has to be over the four and a bit months I’ve been here and I also respect the staff who were already at the club before I came in. I’ll listen to them and I want to know what they think because they’ve seen a lot of the ugly stuff before I came in and they’ve seen who were the leaders and who really stepped up.”
The Cobblers boss will meet players on Monday and Tuesday to deliver decisions, with many out-of-contract and the squad expected to undergo a significant reshaping ahead of the 2025–26 season.

Departures inevitable as Nolan shapes his vision
Northampton’s 2024–25 campaign saw moments of promise under Nolan, but inconsistencies and a lack of depth forced the manager to rethink his long-term approach. With his first full summer transfer window looming, these squad discussions mark the first step toward building a team in his image.
Speaking about the process, Nolan added:
“There will be difficult conversations but that’s the nature of football and that’s what happens at this time of the year. The ones who leave will go with my blessing and they can always give me a call whenever they want and I’ll tell them that.”
Before offering new deals or confirming exits, Nolan will spend the next two days in dialogue with staff to ensure decisions are aligned with the club’s direction. For many players, this week could mark the end of their time at Sixfields.
Writer’s View
Kevin Nolan has impressed with his pragmatic approach since arriving at Northampton. His willingness to lean on staff while taking full responsibility shows leadership, but the true test begins now. With a big summer ahead, the Cobblers need clarity, conviction and a squad that reflects Nolan’s tactical intent. The retained list could offer the first glimpse of what a ‘Nolan-era’ Northampton might look like.
