Hull City have opened an internal investigation following the circulation of a video online which appears to show club captain Lewie Coyle involved in a street fight in Hull city centre.
The footage, filmed on Sunday evening, appears to capture a physical altercation outside the Empress pub at approximately 8 pm. Coyle, who is shirtless in the video, is seemingly restrained and led away by his brother Rocco, who also plays for Hull City.
Club response and online reaction
The video quickly made the rounds on social media, prompting responses from both fans and the media. BBC Humberside Sport confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that Hull City were aware of the incident and were actively investigating.
“Hull City is aware of a video currently circulating on social media and has launched an investigation into the matter. The club will refrain from making any further comment until the investigation has been concluded,” the club said in a statement.
The incident occurred just 24 hours after Hull secured their Championship status for another season. A 1-1 draw with Portsmouth on the final day of the campaign ensured survival on goal difference, with the Tigers finishing level on points with Luton Town.

After loan spells with Fleetwood Town, where he became a fan favourite across three seasons, Coyle signed permanently for the Cod Army in 2020. Shortly after, he joined his hometown club Hull City, playing a key role in their League One title-winning campaign in 2020–21.
Coyle was appointed club captain in 2022. He has since remained a mainstay in Hull’s defence, contributing both on and off the pitch.Coyle has been a key figure in the team this season, featuring in 44 of the club’s 46 league matches.
Writer’s View
This latest off-field controversy is the last thing Hull City need following a tense battle to avoid relegation. Lewie Coyle’s leadership has been pivotal on the pitch, but the club now faces the delicate task of balancing disciplinary integrity with his value to the team. The outcome of the investigation could shape Hull’s immediate future both on and off the field — and may influence how they rebuild after a draining campaign.
