‘I Want to Be Valued’ – Leeds United Target Hints at Move

Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff has reignited speculation about a potential switch to Leeds United after fresh reports linked him with a summer exit from St James’ Park.

Longstaff Future in Doubt Amid Lack of Game Time

Longstaff, 27, has found opportunities hard to come by under Eddie Howe this season, making just 12 appearances in all competitions — only two of which came in 2025. Once a regular starter, the Geordie has slipped down the midfield pecking order behind Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Joe Willock, and emerging talent Lewis Miley.

His situation has sparked interest from several clubs, with newly-promoted Leeds United reportedly considering a move. The Yorkshire side had previously been linked with Longstaff, and their return to the Premier League has rekindled their pursuit, according to the iPaper.

Although Newcastle triggered a contract extension to keep Longstaff until June 2026, the club may be open to a sale to generate funds under the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which favour the sale of homegrown talent as “pure profit”.

Earlier this season, Howe offered a frank assessment of the midfielder’s position:

“His long-term future is slightly more unclear. But what I can say is that behind the scenes, Sean has been very good, helping the group, training to a high level and I can’t speak highly enough of him as a person.”

Longstaff: ‘I Want to Be Valued’

Speaking in November 2024, Longstaff himself hinted at the possibility of leaving Newcastle if he no longer feels appreciated at his boyhood club:

“If it’s here it’s great. If it’s not, it’s not. I want to be valued as a player, I want to be appreciated as a player and whether it’s here great. If it’s not here and it’s somewhere else, it’ll be somewhere else.”

Longstaff has been part of Newcastle since the age of nine, progressing through the academy before breaking into the first team during the 2018–19 season. He played a key role in United’s Carabao Cup run and even scored against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League group stages. However, with minutes limited and Leeds in need of top-flight experience, a summer switch could now suit both parties.

Writer’s View

Sean Longstaff remains a capable Premier League midfielder, but his diminishing role at Newcastle suggests a change of scenery may be overdue. With Leeds United looking to add steel and know-how to their squad after promotion, this could be the right move at the right time. The midfielder’s comments suggest he’s open to a fresh challenge — and he may just find the appreciation he’s seeking in West Yorkshire.
