Bolton Wanderers manager Steven Schumacher has praised Alex Murphy for stepping up at the last moment and delivering his best performance for the club in their crucial win over Burton Albion.
The Newcastle United loanee was drafted into the starting line-up after George Johnston sustained a minor hamstring injury in training. Murphy slotted into the left side of Bolton’s back three and helped his side secure their first-ever victory at the Pirelli Stadium, a result that lifted them into League One’s top six for the first time since October.
Schumacher Impressed by Murphy’s Impact
Despite not being part of the initial match plan, Murphy adapted quickly and impressed his manager with his composure and tactical awareness.
“George was going to play but Alex stepped in and I thought he was brilliant,” Schumacher said. “It was his best game for Bolton, definitely.”
“He had done the match prep but not the 11 v 11 stuff yet in training, but I thought he was great. Sometimes in games since we have been here it has maybe taken him 10-15 minutes to get going and get up to the speed of the game.”

Johnston Injury Update
Bolton have downplayed the severity of Johnston’s injury, though it remains unclear whether he will be fit to return for Tuesday night’s fixture against Bristol Rovers.
Schumacher, however, believes Murphy’s display at Burton will serve him well going forward.
“Alex is a good player, and he’s really good at defending his back post as well. He’s tall, he jumps well and heads it well. Maybe there has been a concentration thing for him to start the games properly, and maybe that comes down to confidence as well?”
Vital Win for Bolton
Schumacher also reflected on Bolton’s long-awaited success at the Pirelli Stadium, where they had struggled in previous visits. Burton pressed for a late equaliser, but Josh Sheehan’s stunning strike proved decisive.
“The drop-balls, I was just thinking ‘here we go again’ – I hate this place!” Schumacher joked.
“But Josh’s goal was worthy of winning any game, it was a brilliant strike. I’d say we should have had more goals than what we did, but right now that doesn’t matter.”
“Burton is a really tough place to get a result—it’s a tough pitch, tough crowd, a team that are in form. It was a great result.”
Writer’s View
Murphy’s assured performance at Burton will be a huge confidence boost, not only for him but for Bolton as they push for promotion. His ability to adapt to a new role under pressure was a testament to his talent, and with Johnston’s fitness still in question, he may be called upon again in the coming weeks. Bolton’s ability to grind out results in challenging away fixtures could prove vital in the race for the play-offs.
