Chesterfield Coach Sets Final Day Target

Danny Webb has said his Chesterfield side will be disappointed if they do not deliver in their final day game against Accrington Stanley.

The Spireites’ playoff dreams are still alive but require results to go their way in order to claim a seventh-placed finish and keep their chances of back-to-back promotions intact. With Grimsby Town in their own playoff showdown against AFC Wimbledon, Chesterfield could jump either side – but not both – and need to hope already relegated Carlisle United claim a result against Salford City to have any hope of facing off against either Bradford City, Walsall or Notts County.

Webb Sets Intentions

Speaking to the Derbyshire Times ahead of their trip to Lancashire, Paul Cook’s right-hand man has said his side are up for the challenge to put themselves in with a chance of continuing their season. He said:

“We all wanted to go up at the start of the season and we have given ourselves a chance of keeping that dream alive.

“We are going there to win the game and hopefully get in the top seven. We are in a really good run of form.

“There’s one game to go so let’s try and get into those play-offs. We know it’s out of our hands, but if we win, stranger things have happened.

“To go there and draw and think what if? It’s not a feeling we want on Sunday morning.

“We are looking powerful at the right time and fit. We are going there to have a right go.”

Chesterfield last featured in an EFL playoff exactly a decade ago in 2015 after a sixth-place finish in League One, but were roundly beaten by eventual winners Preston North End.

Writer’s View

As the old adage goes, Chesterfield have to control the controllables. Nothing less than a win is good enough for them to continue play this season and even then require a few favours on their way. The Spireites nevertheless, have had a brilliant first campaign back in League One and all the signs are there that they can only get better. Should they sneak in, they could even be the favourites to reach the final, as potential opponents Bradford City – who they drew with 3-3 just weeks ago – and Walsall have been flagging in recent weeks and in the Saddlers’ case, for months. If they do it, and avoid Notts County, they could go to Wembley and go back-to-back.
