Premier League Duo Set Sights on Burnley Star in Transfer Battle

Crystal Palace and Everton are reportedly in a race to secure the signing of Burnley defender Maxime Esteve ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old has impressed during his time at Turf Moor, attracting the attention of several top-flight scouts, according to ex-Manchester United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown.

Scouts Monitor Esteve Amid Transfer Interest

Esteve, a former Montpellier player, initially joined Burnley on loan before completing a permanent switch in May 2024. Since then, he has established himself as a key figure in Burnley’s defensive setup, which has conceded just 13 goals in 42 league games this season.

“Esteve was one I looked at last year and thought yeah he’s solid, he’s alright, but I wondered whether he would be able to cut it in the Premier League.

“But this season, he’s really pushed on and he’s been an integral part of an outstanding Burnley defence,” Brown told Football Insider.

Both Palace and Everton have been keeping close tabs on Esteve, sending scouts to monitor his performances regularly. Burnley, who are pushing for promotion, remain keen to retain the Frenchman but could be persuaded to sell if a strong bid arrives.

Palace, already experienced in recruiting Championship talent with players like Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze, see Esteve as a potential replacement for Marc Guehi. Meanwhile, Everton’s interest could intensify if Jarrad Branthwaite leaves amid growing transfer speculation.

Brown also pointed out that while Esteve’s overall performances have been outstanding, some question marks remain over his readiness for the Premier League’s intensity, something clubs will consider before making a final move.

“I have to say, there are still a few question-marks about him.

“Everton and Crystal Palace have been watching him, among other teams, and have had scouts at Turf Moor to keep an eye on his performances.

“So they will know all about him and then decide whether those question-marks are too much.”

Esteve, a youth product of Canet and Montpellier, made his professional debut in Ligue 1 against Marseille in August 2021 before moving to England in early 2024.

Writer’s View

Maxime Esteve’s steady rise this season suggests he is ready for the Premier League challenge. Palace and Everton’s interest underlines his growing reputation, but any transfer may hinge on Burnley’s promotion hopes. For clubs seeking a young, composed defender with the hunger to succeed, Esteve looks a strong candidate – but the summer could yet bring further twists to his journey.
