Our Three Predictions For Gillingham v AFC Wimbledon

  • Prediction 1 – Match To Be A Draw – 23/10
  • Prediction 2 – Under 2.5 Goals Scored – 1/2
  • Prediction 3 – AFC Wimbledon To Win – 9/10

First Prediction For Gillingham v AFC Wimbledon – Match To Be A Draw – 23/10

A draw is always a hard push and we always like to see a positive outcome in results, but everything in this game points to exactly that, even though there has been a winner in each of the last six games between the two. The Gills have become somewhat draw specialists in the latter part of the season, with seven of their last eight league games ending in a stalemate. They have only drawn four at home all season, but they have been condensed in this short period it seems. The Dons come into this game with two straight draws, and four in their last six, as their season grinds slowly down. With Wimbledon needing a win, they could be more on the front foot, but they will find it hard to break down a stubborn home defence, and they themselves have the best defence in the division.

Second Prediction For Gillingham v AFC Wimbledon – Under 2.5 Goals Scored – 1/2

With both teams proving very stingy in terms of conceding goals, and also form suggesting a tight encounter, this game will be of few chances, and this will lead to even fewer goals being scored. Both are set up not to lose games, and that might be a solid foundation for points, but not for goals. At home the Kent side has only scored 22 times, while conceding 19, and their London based visitors are very close to those numbers with a 20-18 goal ratio. Wimbledon do average a goal a game over their last six away trips, so they could be good for another here, especially as they are pushing for promotion. Gillingham sneak in at just under a goal per game in that same time frame, and given how Wimbledon are prone to give away leads they could get one of their own, but no more.

Third Prediction For Gillingham v AFC Wimbledon – AFC Wimbledon To Win – 9/10

If ever Wimbledon need a win it is here and now. They have been fortunate that despite not picking up points, those around them are also struggling. So, even though automatic promotion is not in their control, winning this game will put pressure on those above them going into the last two games of the season. This will not be easy though as even though Gillingham are low in the table they have grown some backbone in recent games and at home they are unbeaten in the last five. Wimbledon have won the last two games between the two teams, and a third on the bounce will be most welcome, after slip ups in recent games away from Plough Lane, and put their automatic chances back in their control.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head To Head

Gareth Ainsworth teams may not play the most attractive football but they do get results, and his head will be firmly looking ahead into next season now that Gillingham are safe. He will want to see maximum effort form his players in the last three games, and will put his own personal feeling aside as he once played for the opposition in this game. Elliott Nevitt has been consistent in appearances up front, if not in front of goal as he has only managed four all season. The spark may come from Max Clark in midfield, he has three strikes and five assists. Sam Gale and Conor Masterson have made a decent pairing at the back, and they will have to remain solid in this game as they could face a lot of high balls. Robbie McKenzie is perhaps the key though as both defensively and making moves going forward will be the one to watch.

AFC Wimbledon are rolling with the punches. Every time it seems they are on the ropes they come out swinging. Matty Stevens their top scorer comes from a boxing family and he needs to start landing some knockout blows as he is jabbing well, but the final hit is missing at the moment. Should he add to his 17 goals it could be the spark the Dons need coming into the final fortnight. He will need more help though as Johnnie Jacksons men have gone off the boil in front of goal. Their attacking impetus has deserted them as they play not to lose rather than win. That mentality need have to change. James Tilley, Josh Neufville, Omar Bugiel, all have enough in them to turn games. The best defence in the league has just seen its 20th clean sheet and Owen Goodman in goal grows in confidence with every game. If the Dons miss out on promotion it will likely not be because of bad defensive play.
