Sheffield United Target Told To Focus On Football

Barnsley interim boss Conor Hourihane has heaped praise on young goalkeeper Kieren Flavell following speculation linking the academy graduate with moves to Sheffield United and Fulham.

The 21-year-old has stepped into the first team amid an injury crisis between the posts, with both Jackson Smith and Joe Gauci sidelined. Flavell has earned plaudits for his performances — and now interest from higher divisions.

“Focus on football” says Hourihane

Despite the external noise, Hourihane is urging the Pontefract-born keeper to block out distractions and continue making the most of his opportunity at Oakwell.

“Look, when a young lad is doing well and taking his opportunity, there’s going to be some speculation,” said Hourihane. “He’s done really, really well and needs to concentrate on his football.”

“He’s got people in the background looking around, that’s how football works. He’s a good lad, wants to learn and loves being at the football club. He’s come through the academy and wants to be here.”

Flavell is out of contract this summer, a fact that has prompted interest from clubs further up the footballing ladder. But with Barnsley still in the League One play-off picture, Hourihane is keen to keep the focus on results.

Keeper taking his chance

Flavell has impressed since being handed the gloves, and Hourihane is full of praise for his attitude and application.

“I’ve given him an opportunity and he’s taken it, giving me back everything he’s got,” said the Reds boss. “From now until the end of the season, he’s got a great opportunity to keep playing and I wish him the best of luck.”

Sheffield United keeper situation

Sheffield United has seen a rotation of goalkeepers in recent seasons, reflecting both injuries and competition for the number one spot. Wes Foderingham has been a key figure, known for his sharp reflexes and leadership at the back.

Adam Davies provides reliable backup, bringing experience and composure when called upon. The club also nurtures young talent like Jordan Amissah, aiming to develop future stars between the posts.

Writer’s view

Flavell’s rise has been one of Barnsley’s brightest stories in recent weeks. With his future still unresolved, how he handles the final run-in could shape his next move — whether that’s staying in South Yorkshire or stepping up. For now, his job is simple: keep delivering performances that make it impossible to ignore him.
