Huddersfield Town interim boss Jon Worthington says his side will continue to fight for a League One play-off place despite their poor run of form and a damaging home defeat to Wycombe Wanderers.
The Terriers, once in contention for automatic promotion earlier in the year, have slipped to eighth in the table, four points behind sixth-placed Reading with five matches remaining. Their latest setback came in front of home fans, where they failed to score for the seventh time in nine league matches in 2025.
“We’ll keep fighting” – Worthington
Despite the growing challenge, Worthington remains defiant as his side prepare to face Burton Albion this weekend. “The games and points are running out, but we will keep fighting until the end,” he said. “There’s no doubting that and that won’t change. We’ll go and attack the game on Saturday.”
He added: “I have seen a lot of positives in the Wycombe game and from players. I’m starting to understand the group more and there’s good characters in there. They will push right to the end.”
Since defeating Wycombe in the reverse fixture in January, Town’s form has crumbled — with only six wins in their last 20 outings across all competitions.
Attacking woes and tactical reflection
Huddersfield’s recent struggles have been compounded by their lack of goals, and Worthington acknowledged the need for improvement in the final third.
“We could have been a little bit quicker going forward,” he said. “But going direct in those moments would have made it really difficult to get those opportunities. We have not the profile to do that and have got to work the areas.”
The Terriers’ best chances in the Wycombe game fell to Ben Wiles, but they failed to make any breakthrough — a trend that has become far too familiar for fans at the John Smith’s Stadium.
“We will keep fighting until the end,” said Jon Worthington. “I know the group and there’s good characters in there who will push right to the end.”
Writer’s view
Huddersfield’s belief may remain, but their performances have not kept pace with their ambition. Worthington is saying all the right things, but unless Town rediscover their scoring touch — and fast — the play-offs will slip out of reach. Burton is now a must-win. Character alone won’t be enough — they need cutting edge.
