Newport County Boss Makes Player Contract Admission

Newport County boss Nelson Jardim has stated he would like to see James Clarke return to the club next season.

The defender’s contract in South Wales expires at the end of the season, with the 35-year-old featuring in 20 games across the League Two campaign. The former Bristol Rovers man joined the club in 2021 on a free transfer from Walsall and was named co-captain this season.

Jardim Reveals Hopes

Speaking to the South Wales Argus ahead of The Exiles’ game against bottom side Carlisle United this weekend, Nelson Jardim revealed he would like the centre-back to remain at Rodney Parade.

“There is nothing to share at the moment. As a coach, and he knows this, it’s a yes but does he want it as well? We have to speak and find a way that everyone is happy.

“The club is always most important, everything we do is to make sure it does well.”

He is one of many players out of contract at League Two’s only Welsh club, with Nick Townsend another prominent figure facing an exit this summer. Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke linked him with a move elsewhere last week. Aaron Wildig and Shane McLoughlin are the other key figures out of contract.

County can put themselves to within one point of securing safety this season should they beat Carlisle and Morecambe lose to play-off chasing Grimsby Town.

James Clarke is at the end of his career and whilst an extension will be good for having senior leaders in the squad, it is unlikely he will be a first-choice defender for next season. Jardim said that Newport County wanted him for next season for off field experience and he would certainly provide that along with needed cover should injury issues, like the ones seen this season, come to fruition once more.
