Walsall are preparing to loan out defender Rico Browne for the second time this season, according to reports.
The 21-year-old is expected to make a temporary exit in the coming days in search of more regular football. Browne joined the Saddlers in September 2024 following a successful trial, signing a one-year deal with the option for an additional 12 months.
However, he has struggled to break into the first team, with all three of his appearances this term coming in cup competitions.
National League Interest Grows
The Express & Star reports that several National League sides are monitoring Browne’s situation. With non-league teams still able to complete signings outside the transfer window, a short-term deal remains on the cards.
This would be Browne’s second loan stint of the campaign. He previously joined Tamworth in October, making five appearances, including a standout performance in their 1–0 victory over Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup. After returning to the Bescot Stadium in November, he has continued to find opportunities limited.
Originally from Manchester, Browne came through the youth system at Birmingham City, captaining their U21s before signing his first professional contract in 2022. He had earlier spells with Elche’s academy in Spain and also spent time on loan at Rushall Olympic during his development.
Despite high hopes upon his arrival at Walsall, competition for places has restricted his involvement under manager Mat Sadler.
“I’m delighted to be here. I’ve had a good 10 days and I’ve really enjoyed it. The quality and the standard is really high and that’s what I’ve been looking for. The plans the Head Coach has for the rest of the season suited what I’ve been looking for and I’ve felt really comfortable since I came in. I consider myself a ball playing defender. I do love to defend; I love to get aggressive but I like to take a lot of care on the ball and start attacks from the back.”
With the fifth tier offering him a more immediate route to first-team football, a loan move appears a logical next step in his development.

Writer’s view
Browne arrived at Walsall with a promising CV and the right attitude, but hasn’t been able to translate that into consistent game time. A move to the National League could be crucial, not just to gain experience, but to prove he can handle the physical demands of senior football. With his contract situation still up in the air, the next few months may well shape his long-term future.
