‘Not Telling The Truth’ – Carlisle United Boss Anger At Red Card

Chesterfield cruised to a 2-1 victory over League Two’s bottom club Carlisle United, securing their first win on a Tuesday night since March 2022. T

The result brought the Spireites within four points of the play-off places and sent Carlisle a further step closer to the relegation zone, now nine points from safety. A red card for midfielder Elliot Embleton compounded things, confusing Mark Hughes, the Cumbrains’ manager.

Early Setback

The visitors were already on the back foot early in the match, with Michael Olakigbe’s shot deflecting wide and Jenson Metcalfe’s effort going just over the bar. Ollie Banks also tested Carlisle keeper Gabriel Breeze, who did well to turn the shot over the bar. However, the key moment of the first half came when Carlisle’s Embleton, a 29th-minute substitute for the injured Sean Fusire, was sent off for a challenge on Armando Dobra just before the break.

Chesterfield made their numerical advantage count in the second half. The opening goal came in the 73rd minute when Liam Mandeville fired in from close range, following up after Metcalfe’s shot had been blocked. Two minutes later, the lead was doubled when Dobra’s shot rattled the crossbar, and Paddy Madden was on hand to head home the rebound.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Carlisle managed a late consolation goal through Joe Hugill, who capitalised on an error by Chesterfield’s Jamie Grimes. However, it was a mere consolation as the Spireites held on for the win.

“It was really difficult for us this evening. Clearly, it started off badly. We lost Matty Dennis in the pre-match warm-up, so we had to make a change there. Then we had Sean [Fusire], who had a really bad nosebleed, we couldn’t stop it.

“So he had to come off very early. Embo [Elliot Embleton] comes on, gets sent off,” said Carlisle manager Hughes, reflecting on the night’s struggles.

“He [the fourth official] told the referee that it was a sending off, which is his prerogative.

“He did say that he didn’t have any communication with the referee, but he was able to get that message on. Somebody’s not telling the truth there. We’re disappointed.”

Mark continued to discuss the refereeing decisions and their impact on the match, admitting that the team had to dig deep under difficult circumstances.

Writer’s View

It was a disappointing evening for Carlisle, with the red card and subsequent goals leaving them with little to show for their efforts.

However, Chesterfield’s performance demonstrated their dominance over a struggling Carlisle side, and the win pushes them closer to the League Two play-off positions. With Mandeville and Madden in fine form, the Spireites will be hoping to maintain their momentum as the season progresses.
