Crewe Alexandra Seal Agreement With 35-Year-Old

Crewe Alexandra have confirmed that captain Mickey Demetriou has agreed a new contract with the League Two club, extending his stay until at least summer 2026 – with the option for a further year.

Since arriving from Newport County in July 2023, Demetriou has established himself as a key figure both on and off the pitch. Initially signed on a one-year deal, the experienced defender quickly won the respect of teammates and supporters alike, earning the captain’s armband midway through his first season at Mornflake Stadium.

Commanding presence earns extended stay

The 35-year-old has made 86 appearances and scored 11 goals for the Railwaymen, combining defensive resilience with an eye for goal. His leadership was instrumental during Crewe’s League Two campaign last season, including a pivotal goal in their play-off semi-final against Doncaster Rovers and inclusion in the EFL League Two Team of the Year.

Demetriou’s journey to this point is a remarkable one. Originally a striker in non-league football with Worthing and Bognor Regis Town, he was transformed into a defender at the Glenn Hoddle Academy in Spain. Stints at Eastbourne Borough, Kidderminster Harriers and Shrewsbury Town followed, with Demetriou playing an important role in Shrewsbury’s promotion to League One in 2015.

His Football League career continued at Cambridge United and later Newport County, where he became a fan favourite and helped the Exiles reach two play-off finals. A recognised community figure as well, Demetriou was named PFA Community Champion for the 2022–23 season.

After joining Crewe, he made an immediate impact – scoring on his debut and leading the backline with authority. His consistency and influence led to a mid-season contract extension in February 2024, and his latest deal represents further faith in his role at the club.

“18 months have flown & I’ve loved it! Creating so many memories on & off the pitch I’m buzzing that we have the chance to create even more,” said the 35-year-old.

“Really looking forward to the next 12 months & beyond! But first these important eight games & we’re ready to give everything we’ve got!”

Demetriou is expected to captain the side again this weekend when Crewe face local rivals Port Vale – a match that could have implications in the race for promotion.

Writer’s view

Demetriou’s career resurgence at Crewe Alexandra is a testament to the power of persistence and adaptability. From non-league beginnings to professional stalwart, his leadership and form have underpinned the Railwaymen’s recent success.

This new deal isn’t just a reward for past performances – it’s a declaration that Crewe sees him as central to their future push. With a crucial derby on the horizon, Demetriou’s experience could prove vital once again.
