Port Vale Promotion Push Dented In Barrow Defeat

Port Vale’s hopes of closing in on a League Two play-off place suffered a major blow as they slipped to a 1-0 home defeat against a resurgent Barrow side at Vale Park.

Ben Jackson’s first-half strike proved decisive as the visitors held on for a gritty win, their third over Vale this season following earlier victories in the league and League Cup.

Barrow weathered a wave of second-half pressure, with goalkeeper Paul Farman producing a string of crucial saves to frustrate Darren Moore’s side, who also struck the woodwork three times in a dramatic closing spell.

Jackson delivers again for Bluebirds

The visitors began brightly and had an early sight of goal when Kian Spence’s free-kick forced Ben Amos into a decent stop. Spence then played provider, knocking down a long ball from Farman into the path of Jackson, who fired narrowly over the bar.

That warning shot was not heeded by Vale, and Jackson made no mistake ten minutes before the break. Latching onto a loose ball on the edge of the area, the midfielder drove his effort low through a crowded penalty box and into the net.

Barrow lost Spence to injury just before half-time, with MJ Williams slotting into midfield. Despite the disruption, Andy Whing’s side remained composed and disciplined, especially after the interval when Vale turned up the intensity.

Substitute Lorent Tolaj came close with two dangerous free-kicks, the second of which cannoned off the bar. Jayden Stockley then saw a header hit the inside of the post, and moments later, Ben Garrity rattled the bar with another aerial effort.

Farman stood firm, making key saves to deny Jesse Debrah twice in the final stages, including a spectacular double stop, to preserve Barrow’s lead and secure their best away run since 2023.

Writer’s view

Port Vale will feel this was one that got away. They created more than enough to win, but lacked a clinical edge and came up against an inspired Farman.

For Barrow, it was a textbook away performance — disciplined, opportunistic, and resilient. Whing’s impact is increasingly clear, and with five games unbeaten, the Bluebirds look to be finishing strongly after a tough start to the season.
