Shrewsbury Town Turn To Former Lincoln City Boss

Shrewsbury Town have moved swiftly to appoint Michael Appleton as their new head coach, just hours after Gareth Ainsworth’s unexpected switch to League Two side Gillingham.

Appleton, 49, arrives at the Croud Meadow with a wealth of managerial experience across the English Football League, having previously taken charge at Portsmouth, Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers, Lincoln City, Oxford United and most recently Charlton Athletic.

Appleton tasked with steadying the ship

The former midfielder has signed a deal that runs until the end of the current season, stepping into the Salop dugout at a turbulent time following Ainsworth’s surprise departure. Appleton will be assisted by Richard O’Donnell and is expected to be in charge for this weekend’s League One clash against Birmingham City.

The ex-West Bromwich Albion coach faces a challenging run-in with Shrewsbury sitting precariously in the League One standings, with relegation all-but confirmed. His recent spell at Charlton ended in January 2024 after a 12-match winless streak, but the club’s hierarchy remain confident that he’s the right man to lead them forward – at least for now.

His coaching journey began after injury ended his playing career early. Appleton moved into youth coaching at West Brom and later served as caretaker manager in the Premier League. Since then, he has built a reputation as a manager unafraid of taking on tough jobs, most notably during his time at Oxford United, where he achieved promotion and led the club to two EFL Trophy finals.

Spells at Blackburn and Blackpool were less fruitful, with short stints marked by instability. However, his successful tenure at Lincoln saw him win plaudits for his attacking philosophy and player development.

Salop sporting director Micky Moore confirmed that Appleton was the number one target, and the club acted quickly to secure his services. The timing of the appointment leaves little room for transition, but the Shrewsbury board will be hoping that Appleton can inject stability and clarity into a side rattled by recent off-pitch drama.

Writer’s view

This is a calculated gamble from Shrewsbury. Appleton’s résumé is mixed – there are promotions and strong cup runs, but also rapid exits and winless streaks. Still, his knowledge of League One and track record of working with young squads may prove decisive. With the season entering a crucial phase, this is a bold yet sensible move that gives both parties a fresh start – but he’ll need to hit the ground running.
