Huddersfield Town Sack Michael Duff – Replacement Already Found

Huddersfield Town have parted ways with head coach Michael Duff, despite the club remaining in contention for a League One play-off spot.

The decision comes less than a year after Duff was appointed on a three-year contract, tasked with leading the Terriers back to the Championship following relegation last season. However, despite sitting just four points off fourth place, the club’s hierarchy have opted for a managerial change.

‘Not a Decision Taken Lightly’

Club chairman Kevin Nagle pointed to Huddersfield’s poor form in 2025 as the key factor behind the move, with the team managing just four wins in their last 15 matches.

“This is not a decision that I have taken lightly,” said Nagle. “I really like Michael as a person and I know how diligently he has worked for the club since he was appointed as head coach in the summer, so we’ve all been desperate for him to succeed.

However, our results on the pitch since the turn of the year have simply not been good enough. It is true that we’ve had an unprecedented injury situation to contend with, particularly recently, but I believe that the resources we have available are capable of more than the four wins we’ve registered in our last 15 games.

I feel we must make this change now to reignite our challenge for promotion. I want to thank Michael, and I wish him all the best for the future.”

Fine Margins Cost Duff

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Bristol Rovers was Huddersfield’s seventh loss in their last 15 outings, with all defeats coming by a single goal. While Duff’s record of 20 wins, seven draws, and 16 losses from 43 matches suggests he had made some progress, his tenure has ultimately been cut short.

Despite guiding Huddersfield to three victories in their last seven matches, the club felt the need for a change to boost their promotion push. The timing of the sacking has raised eyebrows, given that the team remains within touching distance of the automatic promotion spots.

Academy Coach Steps Up

Huddersfield have turned to their academy setup for a short-term solution, promoting Jon Worthington to interim head coach for the remainder of the campaign. Worthington, who has been overseeing the club’s youth development, will now step into the senior role with immediate effect.

His first game in charge will be at home against struggling Crawley Town on 15 March, a fixture Huddersfield will be desperate to win as they look to keep their promotion ambitions on track.

Writer’s View

Duff’s dismissal feels harsh given Huddersfield’s position in the table, but modern football is an unforgiving business. With the club’s form stuttering in recent months, the board clearly felt decisive action was needed. Worthington now has the opportunity to prove himself at senior level, and with just a few months remaining in the season, his ability to inspire an immediate response will be crucial.
