Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Portsmouth head into this fixture in a great run of form having won four of their last five games, including a magnificent win over league leaders Leeds United on Sunday. Colby Bishop netted his sixth goal of the campaign to hand Leeds their first defeat in 18 games.
A surprise defeat to Luton Town is the only negative from Portsmouth last month of Championship football, a run that has seen John Mousinho’s side win at home against Cardiff City and Queens Park Rangers and on the road at Oxford United.
Pompey’s form has propelled them to 17th place in the Championship with a ten point cushion between themselves and the final relegation place. The Fratton Park outfit have collected 42 points from their 36 games, winning 11 and losing 16 of those matches.
Portsmouth have lost just four times at home this season and have taken 32 of their 42 points on their own patch. Callum Lang is the club’s top scorer with 10 goals followed by Josh Murphy and Colby Bishop who have six apiece while Murphy leads the assist charts with nine.
They have scored 44 goals in the league this season at an average of 1.2 strikes per game and have conceded 57 goals at an average of 1.6 per outing and the club have kept eight clean sheets.
Plymouth Argyle have picked up just two points from their last five league games and haven’t won since the week of Valentines Day when they demolished Milllwall 5-1 at Home Park. Since beating the Lions, Argyle have lost on the road at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City and at home to Sheffield Wednesday last time out.
Their points have come against Luton Town and Cardiff City with both games ending in a 1-1 draw. At Luton, Plymouth had to come from behind to rescue a point and did so thanks to Maksym Talovierov who cancelled out Jacob Brown’s opener. In their home match with Cardiff, the Pilgrims again had to come from behind after Yousef Salech gave the Bluebirds a 12th minute lead. Cardiff were reduced to ten men before the hour and Muhamed Tijani equalised for the home side 15 minutes later but they were unable to find a vital winner.
Argyle are bottom of the Championship and 16 points from safety having claimed just 30 points from their 36 games, winning just six times. Top scorer Ryan Hardie has bagged five goals while Mustapha Bundu has four goal and four assists to his name. Plymouth have scored one goal per game this season and have conceded an average of two, meaning they have the worst defence in the division.
These two sides have met regularly over the past decade, with 22 meetings since 2012 with Plymouth Argyle edging it seven wins to four. The meeting earlier this season at Home Park saw Plymouth record one of their six victories this season thanks to a solitary goal from Michael Obafemi.
Portsmouth and Plymouth previously met in League One during the 2022-23 season with Argyle picking up four points on their way to the title and 101 points. The first meeting was a dramatic 2-2 draw that saw Josh Koroma give Pompey the lead before the Pilgrims struck twice late on and looked to have snatched all three points. Brendan Galloway was then sent off in the 92nd minute and Reeco Hackett grabbed a point for the hosts three minutes later.
The Pilgrims were too good for Portsmouth in the return at Home Park and claimed a 3-1 win thanks to goals from Sam Cosgrove, Finn Azaz and Ryan Hardie as Reeco Hackett again scored for Portsmouth.
Portsmouth’s last victory came all the way back in 2018 in League One as Pompey qualified for the playoffs and Plymouth were relegated to League Two. A Ronan Curtis brace either side of a Jamal Lowe strike gave the Fratton Park natives a 3-0 win.
