Exeter City Boss Reveals Double Injury Blow

Gary Caldwell has confirmed that Exeter City will be without two defenders for the remainder of the season.

The Grecians, who had one of the league’s best defences in the first half of the season, have suffered heavily over recent months and slipped into a relegation battle in League One.

“Quite Serious Injuries”

Speaking to Devon Live ahead of their match against Reading tonight, Gary Caldwell confirmed that both Johnly Yfeko and Jack Fitzwater will be out for a significant period of time, with Rangers loanee Yfeko out for the remainder of the season whilst the latter is likely to have suffered the same fate.

“Johnly is working with the physios, alongside Fitzy and Yanic (Wildschut), the longer-term injuries, and they all look like they will miss the season. Fitzy might be able to get back for a few weeks of it, but Johnly will be the rest of the season and that is a big disappointment because he was a fantastic player at the start of the season for us.

“The two injuries he has had have been quite serious injuries and we have to get to the bottom of them and he has had a lot of work to do over the summer to continue his development as a player.”

Writer’s View

Exeter have been thrust into a defensive crisis very quickly with three centre-backs and wingback Yanic Wildschut all out for this game, and of those only captain Pierce Sweeney likely to see action again this season. They still have enough defenders with Angus MacDonald and Alex Hartridge playing the last game against Northampton Town, whilst former Bradford City loanee Cheick Diabate able to support them if necessary. With teams below them like Burton Albion and Cambridge United picking up results, The Grecians are in a very precarious position for the remainder of this campaign.
