Davis Keillor-Dunn’s brilliance proved decisive as Barnsley edged past Northampton Town with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Sixfields.
The forward struck twice, delivering two outstanding finishes to put the Tykes in control before a late red card for Mael de Gevigney left them clinging on in stoppage time.
Bright Northampton Town Start
Northampton started brightly, creating early chances to take the lead. Mitch Pinnock’s drilled free-kick was well held by debutant Barnsley goalkeeper Jackson Smith, before the shot-stopper made an impressive full-length save to deny Liam Shaw’s dipping effort from distance.
Barnsley weathered the early pressure and began to assert themselves as the half progressed. Their breakthrough came in the 36th minute when Keillor-Dunn picked up a cross-field pass, cut inside, and unleashed a stunning left-footed strike past Nik Tzanev to open the scoring.
The visitors continued to push forward after the break, and Keillor-Dunn was at it again just before the hour mark. This time, he collected a pass from Stephen Humphrys inside the box and curled a superb right-footed shot into the bottom corner, doubling Barnsley’s advantage.
The game seemed all but settled until Northampton found a way back into the contest in the 78th minute. Sam Hoskins reacted quickest after Dara Costelloe’s shot was blocked, firing home from close range to ignite hopes of a late comeback.

Late Barnsley Drama
Barnsley’s nerves were tested further when De Gevigney was sent off in the 87th minute for a foul on Tariq Fosu, leaving them to defend their lead with 10 men through more than 10 minutes of added time.
Despite the late drama, the Tykes held firm to secure a crucial three points in their push for promotion, while Northampton were left frustrated after failing to capitalise on their numerical advantage.
Writer’s View
Keillor-Dunn’s quality was the difference on the night, as Barnsley demonstrated both attacking brilliance and defensive resilience to come away with the win. His two expertly taken goals showcased his finishing ability, while the Tykes’ defensive effort in the closing stages highlighted their determination.
For Northampton, the inability to break through in added time will be a major frustration. With the race for promotion intensifying, Barnsley will take confidence from this hard-earned victory, but they will need to keep their discipline in future games to avoid similar late scares.
