Exeter City forward Jay Bird has sealed a loan move to Rochdale, joining the National League side until the end of the season.
The 23-year-old, who arrived at St James Park in the summer, will now look to gain regular playing time in a competitive league. Bird has featured in 20 matches for Exeter this season, finding the net twice. His first goal came in the Vertu Motors Trophy against Bristol Rovers, while his second was part of City’s thrilling 5-3 FA Cup victory over Barnet.
Rochdale, currently sitting in 10th place in the National League, will be hoping Bird’s arrival bolsters their attacking options as they push for a strong finish to the campaign.
Manager’s Take on the Loan Move
“The loan is a perfect opportunity for Jay to go out and get regular minutes in a competitive league to help build his fitness and score goals so he’s in a better place for later on this season or next season.”
Bird, who previously played for Milton Keynes Dons, Dagenham & Redbridge, and Scottish side Arbroath, signed for Exeter City last July on a one-year deal with an option for a further year. His move to Rochdale suggests the club wants to see him develop further before making a long-term decision on his future.

Jay Bird’s Career
Born in Milton Keynes, Bird developed through the Milton Keynes Dons academy and signed his first professional contract in 2019. A loan spell at Hitchin Town was cut short due to injury, but he made his senior debut for MK Dons in 2020, scoring twice in an EFL Trophy match. Limited opportunities led to a loan move to Wealdstone before he was released in 2022.
Bird then joined Dagenham & Redbridge on a non-contract basis, making an instant impact with a debut goal. A move to Scottish side Arbroath followed in 2023, where he spent a season before signing with Exeter City in July 2024.
Writer’s View
Bird’s loan spell at Rochdale could be crucial for his career. While he has shown glimpses of his ability, he has struggled to cement a regular starting place at Exeter. A strong run of performances in the National League could give him the confidence and sharpness he needs to return as a more complete player. With Exeter’s forward line needing consistent goal contributions, Bird’s development over the next few months will be one to watch.
