Barnsley Defender Confirms Major Injury Blow

Barnsley‘s Georgie Gent has revealed he will be missing for the remainder of the season with an injury.

The 21-year-old joined from Championship side Blackburn Rovers over the summer and made 30 appearances this season and scored his first Tykes goal in his last game against Lincoln City.

Injury Curtails Season

Whilst his day at Oakwell was one of his high points, it ended on a disappointing note as he limped off the pitch in the late stages of the game against The Imps. It has since been revealed that it was an Achilles Tendon rupture, which means his season is now over.

Speaking on social media, Gent said (Quotes via Yorkshire Post):

“Was hoping for the best today, but it wasn’t to be. Unfortunately after getting my scan results, I found out that my season has finished early.

“I got the news that I have ruptured my Achilles tendon and will be out for a good while. I will do everything in my power to get back fitter and stronger than ever.”

Barnsley do have some strong cover at left wing-back, with Neil Farrugia making six appearances since joining the club in January and performed well in his last game against Northampton Town.

Writer’s View

It is a big blow for Barnsley to lose Georgie Gent heading into a crucial run in which will decide whether The Tykes make the playoffs once again. He has been a constant in Darrell Clarke’s squad and whilst there are capable deputies to him in the squad, none of them are truly dedicated left wing-backs. Neil Farrugia may be given some more regular game time as he did in midfield last month, or perhaps Wolves loanee Dexter Lembikisa will swap wings and fill in for the remainder of the season. It is not a season-defining blow for Barnsley but their squad is becoming thinner and thinner.
