Sheffield Wednesday Boss With Delayed Contract Revelation

Sheffield Wednesday will delay making final decisions on their coaching staff contracts until the conclusion of the current campaign, despite uncertainty surrounding the long-term futures of several key figures.

Contract Uncertainty for Röhl’s Coaching Team

While manager Danny Röhl committed his future to Hillsborough with an extension running until 2027, the same cannot yet be said for his backroom staff. It emerged last year that the contracts of Röhl’s core coaching team—including Sascha Lense, Sal Bibbo, Henrik Pedersen, and Chris Powell—were not aligned with his extended deal and are instead set to expire this summer.

Despite the looming contract deadlines, Röhl has made it clear that discussions over their futures will take place after the season, following a similar approach to how player contracts are reviewed at the club.

“I think it will be dealt with at the end of the season,” Röhl confirmed. “At that point, we will make a general picture and overview, and then I think after a season we have the feedback, we sit together with the club and we will see what it means for the summer, what we have to do, what we can do, and what is best for the club.”

Focus on the Run-In

With just 12 matches left to play, Sheffield Wednesday’s priority remains securing their Championship status before any off-the-pitch decisions are made. Röhl has reiterated that he has a clear idea of what he wants, but insists now is not the right time to discuss backroom staff contracts.

“It’s not for now, this topic. We had this last year after the season, we will have it after the season again. We will bring everything to the point. I have a clear view, but this is not for the moment a topic. At the moment, our focus is on the next 12 games—if it is going well, or maybe really, really well, there could still be three more games.”

The uncertainty leaves question marks over whether Röhl’s trusted assistants will still be at the club next season. Should Wednesday secure their place in the Championship for another year, the club will have some major decisions to make on the structure of their coaching setup.

Writer’s View

It’s no surprise that Sheffield Wednesday are putting off staff contract decisions until the summer. The club’s Championship survival is the priority, and any uncertainty surrounding their league status will naturally delay long-term planning. However, given Röhl’s influence in revitalising the team, ensuring continuity within his coaching staff could be crucial to maintaining progress beyond this season.
