Leighton Baines has been named in a report that links him to the current vacancy at Tranmere Rovers.
The Everton legend has managed just one senior game in his career since retiring, taking charge of The Toffees alongside club captain Seamus Coleman during their win over Peterborough United in the FA Cup.
Rovers Draw Up Candidates
The Prenton Park side are in the hunt for a new boss after Nigel Adkins departed the club this week following their loss to Accrington Stanley. Tranmere now sit two points clear of both Morecambe and Carlisle United in the relegation zone.
According to Alex Crook on social media, a few names have been mooted with the vacancy on The Wirral, with Baines being ‘discussed internally’ by the club. However, it is believed that Ryan Lowe is still one of the leading contenders on their shortlist.
The 46-year-old has been without a role since he departed Preston North End at the start of the season, having previously been linked with a role at Scottish Premiership side Motherwell.
Charlie Daniels was also mentioned in Crook’s post as reporting an interest in the role, having been working in coaching since 2022 and was a youth-level coach at Watford.

Writer’s View
Ryan Lowe is still the standout contender to replace Nigel Adkins at Tranmere Rovers but Leighton Baines does offer an interesting alternative. A familiar face to anyone with an interest in football on Merseyside, he finally made the step up this season, albeit briefly, when Sean Dyche was sacked by Everton and guided his former side to a very strong win against Peterborough United. With the relegation scrap Rovers find themselves in, they will need plenty of experience to guide them through it and Lowe offers that and likely will see some fresh investment when the takeover situation at Prenton Park is resolved in the near future.
