‘Different’ – John Mousinho Addresses Portsmouth Star’s Future

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho remains optimistic that Regan Poole will continue his journey at Fratton Park, despite the defender’s unique contract situation.

The Welsh international’s future has been a point of discussion as he approaches the final months of his deal.

Mousinho Confident in Poole’s Future

Poole’s contract, unlike most at Portsmouth, lacks the typical 12-month extension clause. However, Mousinho believes there is a mutual desire between the club and the player to secure his future on the south coast.

Poole, who joined Pompey from Lincoln City in the summer of 2023, made an instant impact before suffering a serious knee injury that sidelined him for ten months. After a further two-month absence due to a hamstring issue, he has since re-emerged as a key player in Pompey’s push for Championship stability.

“That’s one where it’s slightly different with the construction of that contract. I think away from me being at the football club, I’d be very surprised if both parties weren’t keen to get something done,” Mousinho stated.

Poole’s Form and Importance to Pompey

The 26-year-old’s return comes at a crucial time for Portsmouth, particularly as defensive issues mount ahead of their upcoming fixture against Luton Town. Mousinho has been impressed by Poole’s ability to seamlessly slot back into the squad, despite a disrupted campaign.

“He was fantastic for the first 15 games of last season, playing almost every minute and helping keep defensive solidity,” Mousinho explained. “He came back into the side this season in brilliant form before a slight dip, by his own admission.”

Poole’s return last weekend was a significant boost, with Mousinho praising his composed performance against Queens Park Rangers. The defender was introduced just before half-time in a goalless game and helped Pompey secure a vital result.

A Different Player Physically

With his latest injury behind him, Poole is determined to rediscover the level of performance he showed before his ACL setback. Mousinho acknowledges that Poole is in a much better physical condition than when he initially returned in September.

“He’s got to keep going, and that’s the challenge for Regan,” Mousinho added. “When he came back at Burnley, he looked good but then dropped off. Now, after having more time to recover, he’s in a much better place physically.”

Writer’s View

Poole’s contract uncertainty presents an interesting dilemma for Portsmouth. His talent and experience make him a valuable asset, yet his injury record raises valid concerns. Mousinho’s faith in him suggests an extension is likely, but Pompey will need to weigh the risks carefully. If Poole maintains his current level, securing his services beyond this season should be a priority for the club.
