Portsmouth Boss Responds Strongly To Criticism

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho has dismissed criticism of his team’s playing style, insisting he takes comments about their physicality and direct approach as a “compliment.”

Pompey’s impressive home form has been a source of frustration for visiting managers, with some branding their approach as ‘old-school football’ and ‘long ball.’

Despite this, Mousinho’s men have been dominant at Fratton Park, winning eight and drawing two of their last 11 home fixtures. Their strong performances have helped them move nine points clear of the Championship relegation zone.

Mousinho Unfazed by Complaints

Speaking to The News, Mousinho made it clear he is not concerned about opposition managers’ opinions on Portsmouth’s tactics.

“I want players to compete, I want them to be tough, I want them to stand up to challenges, I want them to represent what Pompey is about. I want them to represent Fratton Park, I want them to represent the city and the fans. They expect a certain level of commitment, and that commitment often looks like an intense, aggressive side.”

Managers from rival clubs, including QPR’s Marti Cifuentes and Stoke City’s Mark Robins, have criticised Portsmouth’s physicality. Robins even suggested his team had been ‘bullied’ in their recent 3-1 defeat at Fratton Park.

Mousinho, however, believes intensity and physicality are key elements of top-level football and is unapologetic about his approach.

Adapting to Opponents

The Pompey boss also explained how his side adapts to different challenges, sometimes playing a passing game but also using a direct approach when necessary.

Against QPR, Mousinho noted their aggressive pressing style, which left space in other areas of the pitch. He defended his team’s tactics, pointing out that Portsmouth had nearly equal possession with QPR and completed only nine fewer passes.

Despite criticism, statistics show Pompey are not the most ill-disciplined side in the Championship, with teams like Watford, Sunderland, and Preston accumulating more bookings this season.

Writer’s View

Mousinho’s response to criticism reflects a manager who is focused on results rather than perception. With Portsmouth’s strong home form keeping them clear of relegation trouble, it’s clear his tactics are working. While opposition managers may complain, Pompey fans will likely embrace a style that keeps their club competitive in the Championship. After all, success speaks louder than words.
