Veteran striker Jay Rodriguez may be playing in League One for the first time, but the former Premier League forward insists the competition is tougher than many might expect.
The 35-year-old joined Wrexham from Burnley in January and has already made an impact as the club pushes for a third successive promotion.
A New Challenge for Rodriguez
Rodriguez, who has spent his entire career at the top levels of English football, including over 250 Premier League appearances for Burnley, Southampton, and West Brom, has been tasked with helping Wrexham secure automatic promotion to the Championship.
Despite dropping down the divisions, the experienced frontman has been impressed by the quality of football in League One.
“It’s full of quality. Teams make it difficult for you in different ways,” Rodriguez explained. “You can see from the goals we’ve scored and they’ve scored, it’s top quality, and you get punished for a lack of concentration. Likewise, you have to punish them quickly. You don’t get too many chances.”
Since arriving at The Racecourse in the winter transfer window, Rodriguez has started all four of Wrexham’s league fixtures. The Red Dragons have won three of those matches, with the only setback being a 2-1 home defeat to Leyton Orient. The club currently sits third in the League One table, just three points behind second-placed Wycombe Wanderers with 14 games remaining.

Hollywood Backing and a Warm Welcome
With the club owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham’s rise has drawn global attention. Rodriguez has quickly settled into his new surroundings and was given a personal welcome by Reynolds upon signing.
“I spoke to Ryan. He sent me a really nice message,” Rodriguez revealed. “That was just another touch in terms of what I felt from the club. The staff I’ve met and everyone involved, it’s been really good. I’ve been made to feel welcome and I am enjoying it here.”
As Wrexham prepares to face Bolton Wanderers at The Racecourse, Rodriguez’s experience and leadership will be crucial in the club’s bid for back-to-back-to-back promotions.
Writer’s View
Rodriguez’s move to Wrexham was seen by some as a surprising step, but it’s clear he’s embraced the challenge. His vast experience and professionalism could be the difference in the final stretch of the season. With the backing of their ambitious owners and a squad full of momentum, Wrexham’s journey towards the Championship is gathering pace.
