Wrexham Boss Issues Andy Cannon Injury Update

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has confirmed midfielder Andy Cannon’s injury could be a bad one following their 2-1 win over Mansfield Town yesterday.

The Red Dragons headed to Nottinghamshire hoping to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat against Leyton Orient to keep alive their automatic promotion hopes. That loss had seen them slip five points behind second-placed Wycombe Wanderers, but with the Chairboys drawing 0-0 with Wigan Athletic on Saturday, this represented a chance to close the gap.

Mansfield are a team in a dreadful run of form, having not won in eight prior to this fixture. Therefore, it was no surprise when Wrexham took the lead in only the second minute courtesy of an own goal from Calum Macdonald. However, the midfielder made amends by netting the equaliser 14 minutes later.

Nigel Clough’s side stayed firm for the remainder of the half, but disaster struck for the Welsh outfit shortly before the break when Andy Cannon went down unchallenged. The 28-year-old received lengthy treatment and was eventually given oxygen and stretchered off.

“Looks A Bad One” – Parkinson Reveals Concern

Wrexham rallied in the second half to eventually secure the three points when Max Cleworth. Speaking after the game, Parkinson revealed he told the players to go out and win the game for Cannon:

“Andy looks like a bad injury. His knee. But we don’t know the extent. It’s not easy when a great lad like Andy is stretchered off. I said to the lads at half-time, ‘C’mon, let’s do this for Andy’. They did that.”

The victory was Wrexham’s third in a row on the road and moves them to within three points of Wycombe in second. They next face a revitalised Bolton Wanderers at the STōK Cae Ras on March 1st.

Writer’s View

It is a huge blow for Andy Cannon, who was enjoying a rare league start. The midfielder has found himself on the edge of the squad this season, despite penning a new contract last summer. He has been in good goalscoring form in the EFL Trophy and was expected to retain his place in the semi-final against Peterborough on Wednesday night. However, it now appears as if his season could have come to a premature end. Hopefully the injury doesn’t look as bad as it looks and he will be back before the end of the campaign.
