Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough has revealed that the club explored the possibility of loaning out defender Alfie Kilgour during the January transfer window.
However, despite discussions, no move materialised, and the 26-year-old remained at the League One side.
Clough Admits Loan Move Would Have Benefited Kilgour
Kilgour, who returned from a long-term injury late last year, has struggled for consistency since his comeback. Speaking to BBC Sport, Clough admitted that a temporary move could have suited the defender at this stage in his career.
“There were things happening in January, a chance of him going somewhere which I think personally would have suited him. That didn’t quite happen.
“I think since the initial high after he came back, he’s struggled a little bit and we’re not in a position where we can put him out there every single week when he’s making mistakes, so he gets through it and plays regularly.
“It’s been such an up-and-down 18 months or so for him. The effect it can have on your mental health and everything is quite significant.”
Future Uncertain as Contract Nears Expiry
Kilgour’s long-term future at Mansfield remains uncertain, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. The Stags now face a decision on whether to offer him a new deal or allow him to leave as a free agent in June.
Since joining Mansfield in 2023, the defender has provided valuable competition in the backline, but Clough’s comments suggest he has yet to fully regain his best form.
Kilgour began his career at Bristol Rovers, where he played 119 times and scored seven goals. He also spent time on loan at Mangotsfield Town, Cirencester Town, Hungerford Town, and Maidenhead United during his early years.
What’s Next for Kilgour and Mansfield?
With the loan window still open for non-league clubs, a move for Kilgour remains a possibility, though it is unclear whether he would be willing to step down a level. Given his struggles for regular game time, a short-term switch could offer him the minutes needed to regain confidence.
Mansfield, who were promoted from League Two last season alongside Wrexham, Stockport County, and Crawley Town, have adjusted well to life in the third tier and currently sit 15th in the table. They played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Blackpool in their last outing and are set to face Lincoln City this evening.
Writer’s View
Kilgour’s situation is one many returning-from-injury players face—struggling to rediscover rhythm in a competitive environment. A loan spell could have provided him with the consistency he needs, but with no move agreed, he must now fight for his place at Mansfield. With his contract expiring in the summer, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether he remains part of Clough’s long-term plans.
