Bolton Wanderers Boss Backs Striker To Finish Strongly

Bolton Wanderers manager Steven Schumacher believes John McAtee’s recent brace against Shrewsbury Town could be the catalyst for a strong finish to his season.

The 25-year-old striker netted twice in the second half to help Wanderers secure a 3-2 victory, bringing them level on points with fellow play-off hopefuls Leyton Orient and Charlton Athletic.

Schumacher Confident McAtee Will Flourish

McAtee has endured a mixed campaign since joining Bolton from Luton Town last summer. Initially struggling to settle into Ian Evatt’s system, he found himself moving between midfield and attack without a defined role. However, under Schumacher, he has now started the last two games and is beginning to show his true potential.

Speaking to The Bolton News, Schumacher was full of praise for McAtee’s efforts and highlighted his progress.

“How many goals has he got? Nine? It’s not bad with 15 games to go,” Schumacher said.

“John did really well for Barnsley last season and played in a system which really suited him. And here, sometimes it does take a little bit of time to settle in and get used to your new surroundings.”

“We had a good conversation with John in the first week we were here. We told him where we saw him playing, what would be required from him with and without the ball, and also what we could do to help him.

“All he has to do is repay us with hard work and energy, which is what he is really good at anyway, so I am pleased for him and I think he’s going to be just fine.

“He got two deserved goals and played well in what was a difficult game against two centre-halves who were really physical. He battled hard and they were two great finishes as well.

“He has shown us the quality that he has definitely got. I think that’s undoubted.”

McAtee’s Role in Bolton’s Promotion Push

With Bolton in the thick of the play-off race, McAtee’s form could be crucial in their final run of fixtures. His ability to find the net and adapt to Schumacher’s system will determine whether he can establish himself as a regular starter in the weeks ahead.

Meanwhile, Johnston’s condition will be closely monitored as the club hopes to avoid another lengthy injury absence for the key defender.

Writer’s View

McAtee’s performance against Shrewsbury was a statement of intent, showcasing his finishing ability and resilience in a tough contest. After a challenging start at Bolton, he now has a clear role under Schumacher, and if he continues to deliver, he could be a vital figure in Wanderers’ promotion bid.
