Newport County Boss On Relegation Threat

Newport County head coach Nelson Jardim has urged his side to keep their foot on the gas after a three-game unbeaten run that has alleviated concerns about relegation in League Two.

The Exiles head into their away match against promotion-chasing Crewe in 17th place, with a healthy 10-point cushion from the relegation zone, and a game in hand over one-from-bottom Morecambe.

Jardim ‘Pleased With Players’

Jardim’s side managed to draw against Salford, before securing vital wins against Barrow and Morecambe at Rodney Parade. While the performances were not always pretty, they were effective enough to help the team focus on climbing the table rather than nervously eyeing the relegation zone.

“I am pleased for the players after the way that they have been working but we have to build on what we have done,” said Jardim. “We are aiming for more every day. These results give us that platform we were looking for and we are back on track.”

Injury Concerns Ahead of Crewe Clash

As Newport prepare to face Crewe at Gresty Road, Jardim is hopeful of naming a settled side, but he faces some late fitness tests due to niggling injuries. Goalkeeper Nick Townsend, who played a key role in the win against Morecambe, is struggling with aches, and right-back Joe Thomas, who worked tirelessly on Tuesday, is also a doubt after feeling fatigued. Midfielder Kai Whitmore, who was limited to an hour of action against Barrow, is another concern. Several players, including defenders Ciaran Brennan and Tom Davies, and midfielders Aaron Wildig and Kieron Evans, are also currently sidelined with injuries.

“We are looking for consistency, so now it’s managing the players we have got,” Jardim explained. “We have some doubts and we have to assess Nick and Joe, while Kai is still a doubt. It’s about seeing how they are going but we need to keep this momentum going and having consistency.”

Upcoming Fixtures

After their trip to Crewe, Newport will face a crucial run of home games against Carlisle, Bradford, and Cheltenham. Jardim is determined to build on their recent form and continue their upward trajectory in the table as they aim to secure their safety and push for a higher finish.
