Tranmere Rovers manager Nigel Adkins has expressed his determination to lead the club out of relegation danger, despite growing pressure and a difficult run of results.
The 59-year-old manager has been under scrutiny following a tough period for the team, but he has received unwavering support from club owner Mark Palios, who publicly backed Adkins in a statement highlighting his experience.
Palios Public Backing
Palios’ statement came on the same day that relegation rivals Carlisle United appointed experienced manager Mark Hughes, with other struggling League Two clubs also opting for seasoned managers to steer them clear of danger.
“I’ve said from the outset that the owner has been fantastic,” said Adkins. “We all want the same thing from the football club and he’s had a decision to make and he’s made this decision.”
Tranmere’s Struggles and Adkins’ Leadership
Tranmere’s recent form has been concerning, with the team suffering a 3-1 defeat to Colchester, leaving them 22nd in League Two, just three points above Morecambe and five above bottom side Carlisle. Despite these setbacks, Adkins remains focused on the process and believes his experience can help navigate the team through the crisis.
“All you can do is control the controllables, so it’s about how hard we work on the training ground,” said Adkins. “We have good coaches and good players, and it’s about how we apply ourselves and the preparation we go through.”
Staying Calm Amidst the Pressure
Adkins admitted that the boos and frustration from the Tranmere fans at Prenton Park have had an emotional impact, but he is committed to staying calm and focused on his role.
“My responsibility is to help a group of very young people try to navigate through a very difficult situation and for me if they can see that figurehead being calm, being controlled and being focused that should help them stay calm, controlled and focused,” Adkins explained.
New Additions to the Squad
As part of Tranmere’s efforts to strengthen the squad, the club made a double loan signing on transfer deadline day, bringing in young talents Sam Mather and Louis Jackson from Manchester United. Adkins is excited about the potential of the new signings.
“They’re young, hungry and talented, and what an experience it will be for them being in a relegation fight. They’ll have to build some resilience and training is intense so they will have to get used to that,” said Adkins.
