Carlisle United have been linked with a sensational move to Steven Gerrard to fill their managerial vacancy.
The Liverpool legend resigned from his post as manager of Saudi Pro League side El-Ettifaq earlier this week, bringing to an end an 18-month stint in the Middle East
Gerrard On Carlisle Radar
According to the Daily Mail’s Mike Keegan, Carlisle are considering approaching Gerrard to become their next manager just hours after they made the decision to sack Mike Williamson. He was removed from his post after just five months in charge with the club five points adrift in League Two.
Whilst certainly viewed as a long shot, reports suggest that the American owners at Brunton Park have raised the idea of an approach to the former England captain.
Gerrard is yet to manage in the English Football League, having taken over at Rangers in his first senior role in management and led the Ibrox club to Scottish Premiership glory alongside former Sunderland boss Michael Beale.
He then moved to Aston Villa but struggled to adapt to the Premier League and was sacked by the Birmingham club before his lucrative move to Saudi Arabia.

Writer’s View
This would be an utterly incredible move should it be true. Steven Gerrard is obviously a big name to have at Carlisle United but the real question is if he is the right man to bring this side away from relegation. His stock has certainly been damaged by the moves to Villa and Saudi Arabia but if Carlisle can capture the man that led Rangers to domestic glory then they could shoot up the League Two table. He is a leader of men and should be able to encourage this squad but the tactics have long been questioned. It feels like a very long shot and a move that Gerrard wouldn’t make considering his status within the game.
