League Two leaders Walsall have secured the loan signing of Birmingham City midfielder Alfie Chang for the remainder of the season.
The 22-year-old becomes the Saddlers’ fifth signing of the January transfer window as they look to maintain their push for promotion. Despite a commanding seven-point lead at the top, Walsall have taken just one point from their last three matches and are keen to reinforce their squad for the crucial run-in.
Chang Returns After Injury Setback
Chang has made 21 senior appearances for Birmingham since turning professional in 2021. However, a serious knee injury in August 2023 kept him sidelined for over 16 months. He finally returned to action last month, coming on as a substitute in Birmingham’s 2-1 FA Cup victory over Lincoln City.
Despite his long layoff, Walsall boss Mat Sadler is confident that the midfielder can make an impact.
“Alfie had a fantastic start to his career at Birmingham, played lots of games in the Championship for them a couple of years ago,” said Sadler. “I’m looking forward to seeing him play, he’s a very tidy football player, brings quality in forward areas and he’s one we’re looking forward to seeing grow as the loan continues.”
Excited for the Promotion Battle
Speaking about the move, Chang expressed his enthusiasm for joining the promotion push at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.
“I’m buzzing and really happy to be here. I’ve heard really good things from people I know that know the club well. The lads are doing really well in the league, so I just want to keep that going and help where I can,” said Chang.
The midfielder, who has been praised for his composure on the ball and ability to dictate play, could make his Walsall debut on Saturday against Colchester United.
Writer’s View
Walsall’s move for Chang is a smart piece of business as they aim to cement their place at the top of League Two. While his injury history raises some questions, his Championship experience and technical ability could prove invaluable in the closing months of the season. If he can regain full match fitness quickly, he could be a key figure in the club’s promotion bid.
