Portsmouth Target Former Lincoln City & Arsenal Man

Portsmouth have moved a step closer to securing the signing of Rotherham United’s Cohen Bramall, with the Championship side having their bid accepted, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 28-year-old has struggled for regular game time this season, featuring in just 16 of Rotherham’s 27 league matches. However, his experience and versatility have made him a key target for Pompey as they battle to maintain their Championship status.

Bramall Set for Portsmouth Medical

Having identified the left-back as a key defensive reinforcement, Portsmouth have now had their bid accepted and are pushing to finalise the transfer. Bramall is expected to travel to the south coast to undergo a medical before completing his move.

Once the formalities are concluded, he is set to sign a deal at Fratton Park, bringing valuable experience to John Mousinho’s squad.

Bramall is in the final six months of his contract at Rotherham and could have left for free in the summer. His departure now ensures the Millers receive a fee rather than losing him for nothing.

From Arsenal to Fratton Park

Bramall’s career has taken him through a number of clubs, beginning in non-league football before earning a surprise move to Arsenal in 2017. While he never made a Premier League appearance for the Gunners, he gained experience on loan at Birmingham City before stints with Colchester United, Lincoln City, and ultimately Rotherham United.

The left-back’s time at Rotherham saw him score his first goal for the club in a 2-2 draw with Coventry City in October 2022. Now, he looks set for a new challenge with Portsmouth as they fight to climb away from the Championship relegation zone.

Writer’s View

Portsmouth’s move for Bramall is a clear indication of their intent to strengthen defensively in a bid to avoid the drop. While he has not been a regular for Rotherham this season, his experience across multiple leagues, including time at Arsenal, adds a level of pedigree to Pompey’s squad. The fact that Rotherham were willing to cash in suggests they no longer saw him as a key part of their plans, but for Portsmouth, his arrival could provide much-needed depth as they enter the crucial final months of the season.
