Club Accept Bid For Lincoln City Linked Midfielder

Accrington Stanley have agreed a fee with an unnamed League One club for midfielder Tommy Leigh, as revealed by Pete O’Rourke.

Leigh is the latest in a long line of non-league gems unearthed by Stanley, having signed from Bognor Regis Town in 2021. He’s bagged 19 league goals in three seasons at Accrington and has 33 goal involvement across all competitions.

It’s now been revealed that an unnamed League One club have had a bid accepted for Leigh, who was valued at £200,000 last summer. Leigh was out of contract this summer but had a one-year extension triggered, meaning Accrington can now ask for a fee, despite him being 24.

That is likely to alert Lincoln City, who were credited with having a bid turned down last summer. At the time, the £200,000 fee was too rich, and instead they signed Leigh’s teammate, Ethan Hamilton.

This summer, the Imps have yet to make a move in the market, but they recently benefitted from fresh investment from former San Diego Padres owner Ron Fowler, which may give them more clout in the transfer market. The two players in the Imps squad who are a similar profile to Leigh, Danny Mandroiu and Ted Bishop, are both out of contract and thought to be exploring their options.

The attacking midfielder began his career as a youth at Portsmouth but was released in 2017, joining Baffins Milton Rovers, where his father was manager. His form at the PMC Stadium saw him move to Bognor Regis, following in the footsteps of his brother, Ashton, before Accrington came knocking in 2021. Last season, Leigh appeared 42 times for Accrington, scoring eight goals.

Away from transfers, most Imps fans and other football supporters prepare for the offseason, there is no doubt there would be a lot of thoughts on the right way to cool off and the fun activities to engage in. One of the top activities many football fans are engaging in recently is casino gambling. Whilst the obvious connection here is with Lincoln, it could be any of the teams in League One with a bid lodged. It’s likely the asking price will be a little lower, as Stanley know if they don’t agree a deal, they’ll lose him for nothing next summer.

There is no surprise he’s heading back into League One, and at 24 he does fit the profile of player Lincoln usually sign – they took Ali Smith, Charles Vernam, Paudie O’Connor and Cohen Bramall from League Two for a fee, all 25 or under, making them an obvious choice.

However, it does feel like that ship may have sailed last season, so don’t rule out the likes of Barnsley and Charlton being interested, or Peterborough, who lovee to splash the cash on lower league talent.
