Stoke City have submitted a formal bid for Republic of Ireland international Mark Sykes, currently plying his trade at Bristol City.
The Championship outfit are eager to bring the versatile 27-year-old to the Bet365 Stadium as the January transfer window edges closer to its conclusion.
Will Bristol City Cash In Before It’s Too Late?
Sykes, who joined Bristol City in 2022, is out of contract at Ashton Gate this summer. With no extension currently agreed, the Robins face a dilemma: either sell now or risk losing him on a free transfer in June. Renowned for his adaptability, Sykes has proven himself capable of playing in midfield, on the wing, or even as a full-back.
Reporter Anthony Joseph revealed on social media platform X that Stoke City have made an official approach for Sykes. However, Bristol City’s response remains unclear. Stoke, managed by Mark Robins, will hope to finalise the deal before the January window closes.

Sykes has been a vital part of the Bristol City squad, amassing 99 appearances across all competitions and scoring 11 goals. His reliability and ability to slot into multiple positions make him an attractive target for Stoke as they look to bolster their squad for the remainder of the season.
“I’m delighted, I came over last week and met the manager, everything was positive. I’ve always wanted to play in the Championship and the manager was honest with me – he told me he would give me a chance here at the club so hopefully things keep moving in the right direction.” – Mark Sykes on joining Bristol City in 2022.
The Belfast-born player began his career at Glenavon in Northern Ireland’s top flight before joining Oxford United, where he clocked 135 appearances and scored 11 goals. Bristol City then signed him, and he has since become a key figure for the Robins. Whether they choose to retain his services or cash in during this transfer window remains to be seen.

Writer’s View
Mark Sykes could be a shrewd acquisition for Stoke City, especially given his versatility and Championship experience. With the Potters in need of reinforcements to push up the table, securing a player of Sykes’ calibre would add depth and dynamism to their squad. For Bristol City, failing to act now risks losing a valuable asset for nothing in the summer – a situation they may regret.
