Hull City are reportedly reconsidering their pursuit of Huddersfield Town winger Sorba Thomas, according to HullLive.
The Tigers have been working to bring the Wales international back to England, but complications surrounding his current loan spell in France at Nantes have made the deal challenging to finalise. The player is valued at around £4 million by Tranfermarkt, and that could be money Ruben Selles looks to spend elsewhere in his quest for Championship survival.
Louie Barry Signing Shifts Focus
Thomas, 26, has been on loan with the Ligue 1 side since the start of the season, where he has made 16 appearances and scored two goals. While Hull City view him as a valuable addition to their attacking options, their focus appears to have shifted with Aston Villa’s Louie Barry poised to join on loan. Barry recently impressed during his stint with Stockport County, and his arrival could fill the gap the Tigers are looking to address.
This development could lead Hull City to shelve their pursuit of Thomas as they assess their current squad depth. Manager Ruben Selles already has a range of attacking players, including Abu Kamara, Joe Gelhardt, and Harry Vaughan, with Liam Millar and Mo Belloumi expected to return from injury in the summer.
“Hull City have been the busiest side in the second tier this month,” reports HullLive, adding that their January business may now focus on finalising Barry’s arrival instead of further reinforcements.

Thomas’ Journey So Far
Thomas began his career in the West Ham United academy before dropping into non-league football with Boreham Wood. Huddersfield Town recognised his potential and signed him in 2021. Since then, he has made 114 appearances for the Terriers, scoring seven goals. Alongside his time at Huddersfield, he has had loan spells at Blackburn Rovers and now Nantes. His long-term future at the John Smith’s Stadium remains uncertain, with no indication yet of where he might play next season.
Hull City, meanwhile, have until the January transfer deadline on Monday, 3rd February, to wrap up any remaining deals. With Barry’s arrival imminent, it seems likely the Tigers will end their pursuit of Thomas, at least for now.
Writer’s View
Sorba Thomas’ versatility and Championship experience make him an attractive option for Hull City. However, with Louie Barry’s arrival close to completion, the Tigers may feel they already have the reinforcements needed to mount a strong campaign. Given Thomas’ ongoing loan in France, Hull’s decision to focus elsewhere appears pragmatic as they balance squad depth with immediate impact players.
