Middlesbrough Boss Discusses Possible January Exits

Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick has hinted at a potential loan move for Alex Gilbert following the arrival of Morgan Whittaker.

Whittaker, signed primarily as a right-winger, adds versatility to the squad and is expected to be utilised in various forward roles. With Liverpool loanee Ben Doak currently occupying the right flank and Finn Azaz preferred as the No.10, Gilbert’s opportunities may remain limited. This season, the 21-year-old has only clocked 70 minutes of Championship action, his progress hindered by a knee injury earlier in the campaign.

Reflecting on the possibility of a loan move, Carrick stated:

“This week is what it is. There are decisions to be made on a number of things. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Swansea City, among other clubs, have reportedly shown interest in Gilbert earlier in the window.

Micah Hamilton’s Loan and Potential Departure for Clarke

Another forward, Micah Hamilton, has already departed Boro on loan this month, joining Stockport County until the end of the season. Hamilton made his debut for the League One side in a 2-0 win over Crawley. Explaining the move, Carrick said:

“It was just to get him a good run of games. He could have stayed here… but then things change, and we thought it would be best for him to go and play.”

Meanwhile, Matt Clarke is reportedly drawing interest from his former club, Derby County. Clarke’s last start came in December’s defeat to Leeds United, with only one subsequent appearance from the bench. On Clarke’s future, Carrick remarked:

“It’s difficult to say with individuals at this stage of the season. There’s a bit to go through this week… we’ll see how it goes.”

Boro’s Tactical Adjustments

As the January window enters its final week, Carrick and his staff are carefully evaluating the squad’s needs. With Whittaker bolstering the forward line and recent signings creating depth, decisions regarding fringe players like Gilbert and Clarke could shape Boro’s promotion campaign. Balancing immediate squad strength with player development remains a key consideration for Carrick.

Writer’s View

Middlesbrough’s transfer dealings reflect a strategic approach to squad building under Michael Carrick. While Alex Gilbert has struggled for opportunities, a loan move could rejuvenate his form and confidence. Matt Clarke’s potential departure may free up resources, but maintaining squad depth will be critical as Boro aim to sustain their promotion push.
