Carlisle United head coach Mike Williamson has acknowledged the need to reinforce the squad following striker Luke Armstrong’s loan move to Motherwell.
Armstrong, who debuted for the Scottish Premiership side in their 2-1 defeat at St Johnstone, will remain with Motherwell for the rest of the season. Despite the departure, Williamson has emphasised the importance of finding the right player rather than rushing into a decision.
“We certainly do need to bring somebody in,” Williamson said, but he maintained there was no immediate pressure to fill the gap. Instead, any new signing must be a strong fit for the squad, which has already seen recent January addition Cedwyn Scott score in the Blues’ 2-1 victory at Fleetwood Town.
Options in the Current Squad
While the search for a new striker continues, Williamson highlighted the versatility within his current squad. Joe Hugill has been delivering solid performances up front, and Scott, who played in a deeper role at Fleetwood, is another option. Additionally, Stephen Wearne and Kadeem Harris have experience playing as a number nine.
“We’ve got lads who can play number nine,” Williamson said. “Joe’s been fantastic, and Ceds can play there too. We have options, but if we’re bringing someone in, it needs to be the right person to add to the group.”

Kadeem Harris Contract Talks
Carlisle are also working to secure a contract extension for Kadeem Harris, whose current short-term deal is nearing its end. Harris impressed in the Fleetwood victory, earning chants from travelling fans urging him to stay. Williamson expressed optimism about reaching an agreement soon.
“I’m hoping it’s very soon,” he said. “He’s obviously contracted for Tuesday, but I’m hoping it’s just as soon as [possible].”
Harris’s influence on the pitch has been a key factor in Carlisle’s recent success, and the club is eager to extend his stay at Brunton Park.
Further Transfers on the Horizon
Sporting director Rob Clarkson has hinted at potential additional signings, stating that the club is still looking to strengthen its squad despite ten new arrivals in January. Clarkson expressed confidence in the existing attacking options but left the door open for further reinforcements.
Meanwhile, departures remain a possibility, with Jack Robinson among the players expected to leave. Carlisle’s proactive approach in the transfer market reflects their ambition to secure a strong finish to the season and build a squad capable of sustained success.
Writer’s View
Carlisle United’s measured approach to transfers under Mike Williamson demonstrates a clear focus on long-term squad building. While Luke Armstrong’s departure creates a void, the team’s versatility and recent additions provide some stability. Securing Kadeem Harris on a new deal would be a significant boost, as his performances have been integral to recent results.
