Macclesfield target former Motherwell defender

Macclesfield Town are running the eye over former Manchester City defender Ellis Plummer according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon.

The 24-year-old has been a free agent since being released Motherwell at the end of last season, but is now looking to get back into the game. That’s alerted Sol Campbell, whose side are 23rd in the Football League.

After joining City as an 11-year-old, Plummer represented their youth teams with distinction, but never broke into the first team set up. He did play for his country, representing England at both Under 16 and Under 17 level.

He was loaned out to Oldham, where he made just four appearances before another switch, this time north of the border with St Mirren.

He played seven games for the Buddies in all competitions before returning to the Etihad, although his time was up. He was released by City at the end of the 2016/17 and went back across the border, signing for SPL side Motherwell on a one-year deal. He made just two appearances in an injury-hit spell before being released.

Our View

He could be a good signing, his football has all be played at a decent level but he’s yet to get a run of games that give him a chance to shine.

Macclesfield don’t need trials though, they need proven performers. They were arguably in with a shout against Mansfield at the weekend, but struggled with basic defending which has dogged them all season.
