Former Derby County academy graduate Morgan Whittaker has spoken out following his £6 million transfer from Plymouth Argyle to Middlesbrough.
The move has sparked controversy, with Whittaker refuting claims made by Plymouth manager Miron Muslic that he was unwilling to play in their Championship match against Burnley.
Denial of Refusal to Play
Whittaker, 24, who was born in Derby, has been a pivotal figure at Plymouth, scoring 20 goals in 50 appearances last season and helping the club secure Championship survival. His performances attracted interest from several clubs, with Middlesbrough ultimately securing his signature to bolster their promotion ambitions.
Muslic suggested that Whittaker was available for selection in the lead-up to Plymouth’s 5-0 loss to Burnley but opted not to play. The forward, however, has categorically denied these allegations, issuing a heartfelt response on social media.
“I just wanted to come on here and say thank you to the Plymouth fans; my time here has been life-changing. I want to make it abundantly clear I never refused to play against Burnley. It was agreed by myself and the manager that due to the bids on the table from both Burnley and Middlesbrough, I would not be available for selection. The coaching staff and my teammates were also aware that I was not included in the squad.”
Whittaker described the backlash he received as “devastating” and reaffirmed his commitment during his time with Plymouth, stating that he trained diligently even after the Burnley match.

Emotional Farewell to Plymouth
In his statement, Whittaker thanked the Plymouth fans, coaching staff, and teammates for their support, expressing his gratitude for the opportunities and memories created during his tenure at Home Park.
From helping the team secure promotion to scoring crucial goals, including a memorable FA Cup winner against Brentford, Whittaker reflected on these achievements as career highlights. “These memories will last a lifetime for me,” he wrote. He pledged to support Plymouth from afar and declared, “My heart will always have a huge space for Plymouth Argyle. A Janner forever.”
